my impressions after reading" the million pound note”.
this time i want to talk about a very famous short story written by mark twain——“the million pound note”. referring to mark twain, you must feel familiar, because we must have read his works before. i still remember the article “ the bite events on the train” in our textbook when i’m in the middle school. what touched me most at that time were his ironic words. yes, he is a great humorist, novelist, writer and orator in america in nineteenth century. during his 40 years’ writing career, he created dozens of short or long stories, among which “the adventures of huckleberry finn” is of the most popularity, which was praised by hemingway as “the first real american literature”. but today i am introducing his another work——the million pound note.
this story tells about a poor but honest american adam henry. when he was wandering in the street of london, he was given by two billionaires a letter, in which he surprisedly found a £1,000,000 pound bank-note. later he got to know that the two billionaires who were brothers had made a bet about the results after he got a one million-pound note at once. one of them thought the note wound count for nothing to the poor man because he could not prove that the money was his own while the other considered just as the opposite. dramatically, the plot went just out of my expectation. herry went to a restaurant to have dinner first. the manager was mean to him at the beginning but his attitude changed quickly when herry took out the note and asked for change. faced with a millionaire, the manager apologized again and again and obsequiously told herry that he didn’t need to pay for the bill right now. so herry managed to have a free dinner.
then similarly, herry went to a clothing shop and got a suit of clothes costing him nothing. like the plot above, people are curious of such a rich man and tried every means to cozy up to him, from free food, free clothes to free accommodation. at the same time, his social status was becoming higher and higher and finally higher than most dukes. apart from that, he later got a beautiful wife and 200,000 pounds of bank interest. i can imagine a bright future was waiting for him. the writing style of this story is so humorous. mark twain used hyperbole describing how our hero defeated snobbishness repeatedly. what i appreciate most is the detailed description of different people’s ridiculous actions before one million pounds, vivid, funny, ironic and humorous, which forms a caricature. in terms of the theme, it is apparent that the author wanted to denounce the overflowing mammonism in the society. even now it gives us an impressive lesson. yes, i cannot deny the importance of money to a person who wants to survive. we won’t live without money, with which we get food, clothes, house and many other necessities.
but we must know that there are many things which can’t be bought with money such as love or friendship. so in my opinion, money may be important to us, but not the most important. we need to build up the correct sense of money. another point i want to emphasize is honesty. from the plot, we can see that there were so many people the brothers could choose, so why just herry? i think it was because he was honest. when he got the note, what he did wasn’t use it right now but return it to the brothers. without a kind and honest heart, herry couldn’t have been such a successful man.
there are various of tempertation alluring us in our life, only by keeping honesty and consciousness inside can we manage to resist them. to sum up, this story is a really good work of mark twain. the lesson i’ve learnt from it makes me want to be an honest man sincerely and lets me not to worship money too much. i begin to regret not reading it earlier.
pride and prejudice is a novel written by jane austen,an english writer, who first gave the novel its modern characters through the treatment of everyday life.“it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in poeion of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.however little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.” the novel directly begins with the theme: marriage and money.jane austen imposed her view of marriage on her describing of relationship among different males and females.according to the novel, males and females in some degree have diffident values towards marriage.through some main characters, we can have a comparison.
first, we throw our eyes to the male characters.take george wickham for example, he is an old acquaintance of darcy from childhood, and an officer in the militia unit stationed near merton.superficially charming, he rapidly forms a friendship with elizabeth benet, prompting remarks upon his suitability as a potential husband.he spreads numerous tales about the wrongs darcy has done to him, coloring the popular perception of the other man in local society.it is eventually revealed that these tales are distortions, and that darcy was the wronged man in their acquaintance.he is a man with bad quality, but his appearance is deceptive, he has a witty tongue and elegant behavior, who is a deadly attraction to women like lydia.once he was addicted to gambling and escape from breton because of a large amount of debts.lydia has neither high status nor money, but he is willing to have an accompanier on his escaping way.the book never mentioned why wickham choose lydia as his wife.the primary reason, in my eyes, is money.because he fell in love with mi king and elizabeth before not because of love but money.at that time, wickham can not have a large heritage because of his lower social status, so he is greedier for money.at last, mr.darcy helped him to pay for his debts and provided him with another 1000 pounds and a official position, which immediately led to his marriage.so we can easily see, in spite of paion, money played an important role in their marriage.besides, mr.collins aged twenty-five, is mr.benet’s clergyman cousin and, as mr.benet has no son, heir to his estate.austen described him as "not a sensible man, and the deficiency of nature had been but little aisted by education or society.” he is a clumsy and conceit man and good at flattering, so he can easily appreciated
by mrs.catherine and gets a position in church.mr.collins chose lady lucas obviously attributed to love.he expreed his reasons about marriage when he asked for elizabeth’s hands:” first, that i think it a right thing for every clergyman in easy circumstances (like myself) to set the example of matrimony in his parish.secondly, that i can convinced it will add every greatly to my happine; and thirdly which perhaps i ought to have mentioned earlier, that it is the particular advice and recommendation of the very noble lady whom i have the honor of calling patrone.” so mr.collins is a person who sacrifices his marriage to reality and reputation.
in spite of mr.bingley and mr.darcy’s values, i think, wickham and mr.collins’s attitudes toward marriage should be the majority of values at that time.males pursue high status and money rather than love.so how could they be happy? their marriages are doomed to tragedies.
now we will throw our eyes back to females.of course, elizabeth benet is our first consideration.elizabeth bennet is the main character and protagonist.the reader sees the unfolding plot and the other characters mostly from her viewpoint.the second of the benet daughters at twenty years old, she is intelligent, lively, attractive, and witty, but with a tendency to judge on first impreions and perhaps to be a little selective of the evidence upon which she bases her judgments.elizabeth believed that marriage must be based on love, which is one of the reasons why she misunderstood mr.darcy before.she is such a girl with great wit, courage and self-conscience so that she is not polluted by society and keeps her own opinions.and at last grasped mr.darcy’s heart tightly and live a happy life.in contrast to elizabeth, her intimate friend charlotte lucas doesn’t think highly either of men or of matrimony, marriage had always been her object.she believes that it is the only honorable provision for well-educated young women of small fortune, and however uncertain of giving happine, must be their pleasantest preservative from want.so although mr.collins to be sure was neither sensible nor agreeable; his society was irksome, and his attachment to her must be imaginary.but still, he would be her husband.this is a miserable marriage which put interest ahead of everything.
it seems a little bit difference between males and females’ attitudes towards marriage.males completely regard money and status beyond everything while women conceal something in some degree but still be obseed by reality.elizabeth is an exception.jane austen expreed
marriage and love vividly among gentlemen and ladies around her by her specific female foresight.she criticized the civil marriages through elizabeth’s tongue.it was obviously that the author not approved that money should be totally divided with love, but not equal to love.it was true that money played an important role in marriage, but it not means one can gain love and marriage through his big fortune.the author made full of other ladies’ relationships to expre the ideal marriage of elizabeth.
i have the same opinion with jane austen on marriage and love.according to the novel, the marriage based on money and reputation is not stable at all and people can not feel happy.whether you admit or not, marriage and love do sometimes aociate with property and status, in my eyes, it not completely lies on property and status.marriage should be based on mutual love and respect.
the little prince is a famous french childrens literature short story written by anthony ·, german ·, and saint eike sue perry in 1942. although the childrens literary works, is now the adult i read, so it is the same, it has the kind of people not aware of the forces in control of regional sadness in our hearts, his words are simple and plain, but it exudes a unique charm.
the little prince is a spiritual child, he lived in a little bit older than he is only on the asteroid. he was accompanied by a tiny rose he loved very much. but the vanity of the little rose hurt the little princes affection for her. the little prince left the asteroid and began his journey into space. he visited six planets, and all kinds of information made him sad. he felt that his people were ridiculous and abnormal. it was only on the planet of one of the lights that the little prince found a friend to whom he could be a friend. but the world of the lamp man was very narrow, and he could not hold the first two men except the light man and himself. under the guidance of the geographer, the lonely little prince came to the earth where man lived. the little prince found that man lacked imagination, only to repeat what others had said like a parrot. the little prince grew more and more yearning for the little rose on his own planet. later, the little prince met a little fox. the little prince conquered the little fox and became close friends with him. the small fox put the secrets of your heart — — the invisible nature of things, it is only with the heart to have a keen insight into matters — — as a gift to the little prince. with this secret, the little prince found the fountain of life together with the pilot in distress in the sahara desert. finally, the little prince died with the help of the snake, and his heart returned to his b612 asteroid.
"the little prince" this fairy tale plot ups and downs, and philosophical implications, "the little prince" the story is simple, plain text. i am very easy to read two times, without the slightest weariness. fairy tales may be a gift for plain living. he lets you read easily, and at the same time gives you something to relax, such as the innocence and beauty of life, such as simplicity and clarity. the authors description of the quest of the little prince is just like our daily life; we are constantly seeking “ the lost beautiful ” and forgetting that it will become a good “ now ”. lost to know how to cherish, lost to know the good. we all want to have our own beautiful world, and we all want the present and the future to be beautiful. but how could that be? we can not keep time, can not let now become immortal, but we can try to cherish now, and try to cherish the upcoming with their search and now the passage of the now.
the story of the little prince is sad, a love wound. love is earnest and sincere, painful and hard to bear. the love of the little prince is pure, elegant, sincere and earnest. if death can bring him back to his star, if death can let him meet with a loved one, he will be duty bound to choose to die, because he is deeply in love with her, because his heart was tamed by the rose. he did the same, and he fell softly, as he knew no one to come to earth.
"the little prince" in fairy tale language and the stock market to start the plot, but works concise language for deep penetration of understanding of human civilization, elaborates on the different types of adult social opinion and criticism, put forward some problems provide much material for thought. in particular, the author praises the friendship and affection of the little prince, and hopes that people will develop friendship and love each other. in the authors view, love must be as hot as the volcano on the planet where the little prince lives. love must be as diligent as the little prince, and eradicate the evil grass for the rose.
i’m forced to read this novel at the beginning, but i can’t wait to finishit subsequently.
"it is a truth universally acknowledges that a single man in possession ofa good fortune must be in want of a wife." this is just as leo tolstoy’s famousstarting in 《anna karenina》: "all happy families resemble one another, eachunhappy family is unhappy in its own way". to begin with such a design, janeausten has her deep meaning. marriage and money are inseparable. the undertoneis very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion butpossession. the author does not deny this. so she uses typical bennets to provethis truth.
the story takes place in the class-conscious england of the late 18thcentury. the five bennet sisters--including strong-willed elizabeth and younglydia--have all been raised by their mother with one purpose in life: finding awealthy husband. so when a wealthy bachelor shows up in their lives, the wholefamily is turned upside-down. but when elizabeth meets up with the handsome butsnobbish mr. darcy, the battle of the sexes is joined.
as we all know, austen, in this novel, through the five bennet daughters’attitude towards love and marriage, shows the relationship between mentalfeelings, such as love, and material possessions , which also reflects theauthor''s attitude: marry for the sake of property, money or status is wrong;marry but do not take into account the above factors is foolish. as a result, she not only opposed to marry for the purpose of money, but also opposed totreat marriage as child''s play. she stressed the importance of an idealmarriage. but in modern society, although the marriages of economic needs havedecreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rootedin some people’s mind.
then let’s e to talk about the meaningful topic of this love story: 《prideand prejudice》
pride and prejudice are our mon problems and weaknesses. in fact, everyoneis very easy to be driven by his own subjective impression and thus easy to makeincorrect ments on others, and then led to misunderstand between people. one’sfirst impression can affect a lot of things for sure, but it doesn’t mean itcouldn’t be changed. the deeper you get to understand someone, the moreobjective points you will have on him or her. the changing of elizabeth’s pointof view towards darcy just proved this perfectly: no pride, no prejudice, andthese two married just because they love each other, just because they need eachother instead of need each other’s possessions. austen is smart, becauseelizabeth got beauty and intelligence while darcy is handsome and rich. i evenwonder if such a perfect marriage could take place in modern society.
